This sword was adopted by the War Department in 1840 and it was carried by NCOs for seventy years. This model sword was used in the Mexican War, the Civil War and the Spanish American War. It a handsome straight sword, single edged. The hilt is made of brass and has ribbed grips that give the effect of wire wrappings. The pommel is globular with a capstan rivet. At the point where the knuckle-bow-quillon crosses the blade there is a double kidney-shaped counter guard. The maker is not evident, but on the quillon there is an “US” and the date of manufacturer, “1862”. The sword is very well made.
