Militia Officer’s Sword 1795

The Militia Officers’ Sword has a brass knuckle-bow hilt with a ferrule at the base of the bone grips. The hilt was gold plated and some gold remains.  The grips are wound with gilt twisted wire. The blade shows faint engravings of both military and floral designs. A shield with fifteen stars indicates the date to be between 1792-1796. These markings are found on the obverse side of the blade.  Actually, this is definitely an artillery saber.  It has the definite curved blade and size for that period.  Referral to it as a “sword” is correct because a saber is a curved sword.  Below, there is a picture of both sides of a tag.  It was on this saber when it ended up in the Corcoran Museum in Washington.  The tag tells the tale!
