Musicians’ Sword  Model 1840   (HLP  46

This is the last sword listed in this collection, but it is far from being the least important or interesting.  There is the inclination to conclude that it was designed for band members far from combat.  Band members did carry the sword, but far more combat soldiers were armed with it and it was their only weapon for self-defense.  The companies of infantry, troops of cavalry and batteries of artillery had young men, often boys, who were buglers or drummers.  Orders were given by bugle calls.  The sword is similar to the noncommissioned sword but there is no double counter-guard and the sword is shorter – only 34 ½ inches long.  The hilt is made of brass and on the obverse of the ricasso , “COLLINS & CO. / HARTFORD / CONN / 1862. “.  The blade is straight, single edged and well made.  The fuller is deep and runs almost to the tip.
