This sword was made by Clauberg of Solingen, Germany. The iron knuckle-bow hilt has an American eagle on the quillon and the wood grips are covered with fish skin, wound with twisted gilt wire. The obverse side of the curved blade is detailed with floral design and an eagle with “E Pluribus Unum” overhead. The reverse side is detailed with floral designs and “U.S.”. The obverse side of the ricasso is marked “Proved +” while the reverse side shows the manufacturer’s name, “W. Clauberg Solingen” The words encircle a picture of a knight in armor. The iron scabbard has two carrying rings and a drag.
This sturdy weapon was popular during the Civil War with foot and field officers. Clauberg was a world leader in the manufacture of swords.
