G

This saber is similar to the saber described at Sword F. The manufacturer differs as this saber was made by H. Sauerbier, Newark, New Jersey. The hilt of this saber is engraved with greater detail. Also, the grips are covered with leather instead of fish skin, but are wound with twisted gilt wire. The engraving on the curved blade is dim and does not show in good detail . The reverse side of the blade does carry the manufacturer’s name. The iron scabbard is also blued with a wider brass throat, a brass drag and two brass carrying rings and bands.
According to Harold L. Peterson, the Sauerbuer company contracted with the Federal Government in 1861 for 100 foot officer’s swords. The blade of this excellent sword does not seem to have been made in a rolling mill. Probably, the entire sword was hand made.
