Light Artillery Saber M 1840 (HLP 43)
The War Department adopted this new and special artillery saber in 1840. It is durable and well adapted to the horse drawn artillery of that time. The blade is well curved and the length is appropriate to the soldier who has to ride, fight and control horses pulling heavy loads in combat. There are no branches on the hilt to interfere with arm movement. This saber is for enlisted men. It was made by the greatest sword maker in American history. Just as Clauberg was the leader in Germany, The Ames Manufacturing Company produced more and better swords than any other company in the United States from 1829 to 1935. The saber is marked, "Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee, Mass.". Generally, enlisted men's swords are dated on the ricasso. This saber has "1862 / CONN", indicating that it was a militia sword. There are no etchings or engravings on the blade. The back of the blade is flat and a deep and broad fuller runs from the ricasso to within six inches of the point. The pommel is a Phrygian helmet pattern made of brass.
