Foot Officers’ Sword, Model 1840  (HLP  80 & 81)

The Foot Officers’ Sword was adopted by the Ordnance Department for company officers of infantry. The hilt is guilded brass, and has a knuckle-bow. The pommel is decorated with floral designs, and the counter-guard is hinged on the reverse side. The obverse blade has floral and military designs, and an eagle with ribbon bearing “E Pluribus Unum”. The reverse side has similar engravings. The mark on the ricasso indicates that the sword was made in Solingen, Germany.  The mark is the “King’s Head”, the ancient mark of the great Weyersberg family of sword makers.  The workmanship done on this sword may be the best in this collection.  This sword was in the Corcoran Museum in Washington, DC.
