Dragoon Saber, Model 1833   (HLP)  31

A contract for three thousand Dragoon Sabers was made with N.P. Ames, Springfield, Mass, in 1833 to equip the three new dragoon regiments. The brass knuckle-bow hilt has a half-basket guard with two branches on the obverse side and one smaller branch on the reverse side. The guard is stamped “JM”, on the obverse quillon side, and ‘HKC/ORD” on the grip side. The grips are brown leather, wound with silver wire.  Instead of a ferrule, this sword has a heavy quill back that runs the entire length of the blade.  This is a different from usual design to give strength without weight. A brass backstrap surmounts the grips and the pommel is a modified bird’s head. The slightly curved blade was lightly engraved but has been ground off.  The War Department poster on the previous page shows the officer’s version of this sword.
