FROM THE PANORAMA OF THE BATTLE OF MANASSAS COPIED BY PERMISSION
The painting, above, shows General Robert E. Lee mounted on Traveler, the gray horse. Lt. Col. Charles Scott Venable rides the black horse in the fore ground. Many historians have visited the Atlanta Cyclorama and Civil War Museum which has the giant circular painting of the Battle of Atlanta. After the Civil War, there were similar paintings of the Battle of Gettysburg and the Battle of Manassas or Bull Run. The picture, above, is of one section of the Bull Run circular masterpiece. After the war, the Bull Run panorama was taken to various large cities in the United States to be seen by the public. Later, it was taken to Europe and eventually stored in a warehouse in Paris. It was stolen and never found. The picture above and a similar one of Gettysburg were published in a book well over a hundred years ago by the W. Duke, Sons & Co. The title is: "The Heroes of the Civil War". I have a copy!
